| Descripción del viñedo | Château d’Yquem: A French family’s story has, for 4 centuries, linked its destiny to this unique nectar in its kind, recognized as the reference in term of Sauternes. It has been classified during the classification of 1855 as the only Sauternes “Premier Cru Supérieur” and remained it until today. In 1453, the region of Sauternes was attached to the field of France. Then, in 1593, Jacques Sauvage, descendant of a long line of notables, has been put at the head of the field. A few years later, the family Sauvage has built the castle. In 1711, the family became the owner of the field. In 1785, Françoise Josephine de Sauvage d'Yquem married the Count Amedée of Lur Saluces. She took over the filed in 1788 at the death of her husband. We can note that already at that time, the vineyard was known abroad. Indeed, Thomas Jefferson greatly appreciated the wine for this field. Françoise Josephine managed to preserve the family legacy and made it prosper. At that time, the area became a wine business, especially with the construction of the cellar in 1826. The harvesting method by successive selections was developed. Therefore, the field is expanding its international reputation. In 1851, Romain Bertrand de Lur Saluces took the head of the area. A simple family possession has become a true vocation. The family’s and the castle’s history just make one. During second half of the XIXth century, people came from the four corners of Europe to taste this famous wine. Japan discovered the Yquem pleasures too. In 1914, the castle was changed into a military hospital. At the end of the war, the marquis Bertrand de Lur Saluces took the castle’s direction. It defended its family’s values, the Yquem’s character and philosophy. In 1968, with his death, his nephew, Alexandre de Lur Saluces took back the Domaine. Yquem suffered the consequences of the trading crisis and of the bad years as well. The Domaine will be saved by a rigorous management and an excellent vintage 1975. The following years make the domaine’s rectification possible. The Domaine continues today to convey its values in the respect of tradition, the opening towards the world and the modernity. A single soil in its kind, type of vines selected carefully, wine making with ancestral methods and a magic mushroom, such are the secrecies of the Yquem’s vines. The selection is the Master word in Yquem… Following disastrous climatic conditions, and in order not to sacrifice quality, the following vintages do not exist: 1910, 1915, 1930, 1951, 1952, 1964, 1972, 1974 and 1992… |
